With one week to go before we elect a new president, the best thing that we can do as Americans is simple: take somebody who isn’t going to vote like you out for a good cup of coffee and enjoy something about life other than politics together. Heck, you can even talk about the election if you’re ready to listen instead of to argue. I had this conversation with a friend today and found it exhilarating.
That’s why I love this picture of Michelle Obama and George W. Bush so much. The former president leaning backwards into the First Lady’s arms. Their smiles conveying the depth of a friendship that goes much deeper than their differences over politics.
I’m not convinced this is the most important election in the history of our nation. Our Republic has survived a war against itself, a Great Depression, and the war to end all wars. It can certainly handle the vagaries of the next president, regardless of whom it is. Congress and the courts will keep things in check, and we’ll have another election in four more years.
In the meantime, let’s enjoy the blessing that we have of living in one of the most diverse countries on the planet. Call a friend who doesn’t vote like you and love him or her anyway.
